AI-Generated Content and Google Search: What Publishers Should Actually Watch

Google’s concern is low-value, manipulative scaled content—not the mere presence of AI. The operational answer is usefulness, originality, review and editorial responsibility.

Google’s current spam policies do not define AI-generated content itself as spam. The risk is scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings and offering little or no value, regardless of whether humans, automation or generative AI produced it.

What Google explicitly warns about

Google’s current scaled-content-abuse examples include using generative AI to create many pages without adding value, scraping or transforming existing content at scale, stitching pages together without added value and creating large numbers of nonsensical keyword pages.

What that means operationally

Do not use an AI writer as a one-click indexation machine. Use it inside an editorial system that selects worthwhile search destinations, researches the topic, verifies claims, adds useful synthesis and reviews the final page.

Affiliate sites have an extra burden

Google’s thin-affiliation guidance warns against pages that simply repeat merchant descriptions. Useful affiliate pages should add decision support: comparisons, navigation, original analysis, clear tradeoffs and accurate current information.

The safer publishing rule

If a page would not be useful without the affiliate link, it probably needs more editorial value. If it exists only because a keyword variant was available, it may not deserve its own URL.
