Definition
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a practical label for improving the likelihood that your information is understood, selected and cited in AI-generated answer experiences. It overlaps heavily with good SEO: accessible pages, useful answers, clear entities, reliable evidence and a coherent site.
What changed in 2026
Google added dedicated guidance in May 2026 on optimizing for generative AI features, emphasizing non-commodity content and clarifying that established SEO best practices remain relevant. That is a useful corrective to the idea that GEO requires an entirely separate set of tricks.
What to improve
Lead sections with direct answers, use descriptive headings, make important claims easy to verify, connect entities clearly, provide original or first-party value where possible, and maintain crawlable internal architecture. Avoid artificial “AI bait” formatting that makes the human reading experience worse.
What not to obsess over
There is no reason to manufacture dozens of near-identical FAQ pages or treat an llms.txt file as a ranking lever for Google Search. Google clarified in June 2026 that llms.txt is not needed for Google Search and does not improve or hurt visibility there.
Measurement
Track query-level organic performance alongside citations or mentions in the AI experiences relevant to your market. The useful question is whether the same strong content assets are becoming discoverable across more surfaces.
